Why Berlin?

Berlin the capital and the largest city of Germany as well as one of its 16 constituent states. With a population of approximately 3.7 million, Berlin is the second most populous city proper in the European Union and the seventh most populous urban area in the European Union. Located in north eastern Germany on the banks of the rivers Spree and Havel. Due to its location in the European Plain, Berlin is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. Around one-third of the city's area is composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers, canals and lakes. Berlin has a Maritime temperate climate according to the Köppen climate classification system. There are significant influences of mild continental climate due to its inland position, with frosts being common in winter and there being larger temperature differences between seasons than typical for many oceanic climates. Furthermore, Berlin is classified as a temperate continental climate under the Trewartha climate scheme.

The Fernsehturm (TV tower) at Alexanderplatz in Mitte is among the tallest structures in the European Union at 368 m (1,207 ft). Built in 1969, it is visible throughout most of the central districts of Berlin. The city can be viewed from its 204 m (669 ft) high observation floor. Starting here the Karl-Marx-Allee heads east, an avenue lined by monumental residential buildings, designed in the Socialist Classicism style. Adjacent to this area is the Rotes Rathaus (City Hall), with its distinctive red-brick architecture. In front of it is the Neptunbrunnen, a fountain featuring a mythological group of Tritons, personifications of the four main Prussian rivers and Neptune on top of it.

Many German and international companies have business or service centers in the city. For several years Berlin has been recognized as a major centre of business founders. In 2015 Berlin generated the most venture capital for young startup companies in Europe. Among the 10 largest employers in Berlin are the City-State of Berlin, Deutsche Bahn, the hospital provider Charité and Vivantes, the Federal Government of Germany, the local public transport provider BVG, Siemens and Deutsche Telekom. The two largest banks headquartered in the capital are Investitions bank Berlin and Landesbank Berlin. Daimler manufactures cars, and BMW builds motorcycles in Berlin. Bayer Health Care and Berlin Chemie are major pharmaceutical companies in the city. The second largest German airline Air Berlin is based there as well.

Berlin had 788 hotels with 134,399 beds in 2014. The city recorded 28.7 million overnight hotel stays and 11.9 million hotel guests in 2014.[125] Tourism figures have more than doubled within the last ten years and Berlin has become the third most-visited city destination in Europe. The largest visitor groups are from Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and the United States.

According to figures from the International Congress and Convention Association in 2015 Berlin became the leading organizer of conferences in the world hosting 195 international meetings. Some of these congress events take place on venues such as CityCube Berlin or the Berlin Congress Center (bcc). Berlin has two commercial international airports. Tegel Airport (TXL) is situated within the city limits. Schönefeld Airport (SXF) is located just outside Berlin's south-eastern border in the state of Brandenburg. Both airports together handled 29.5 million passengers in 2015. The New Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), currently under construction, will replace Tegel as single commercial airport of Berlin. The airport is going to integrate Schönefeld (SXF) facilities and is estimated to open in October 2019.

TRACK:1 DENTISTRY

Dentistry is a branch of medicine that involves all the first aid interventions on the stomatognathic system. It includes the study, the diagnostics, the prevention and the treatment of diseases and pathological conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and their adjacent structures. Dentistry deals not only with the teeth but also the other aspects of the craniofacial complex including the temporomandibular and other adjacent structures. Screening tests in dental sciences may be utilised for twin purposes namely at a pre diagnostic and at an early diagnostic stage. High risk groups are identified and are subjected to health promotion and specific protection measures at a pre-diagnostic stage. According to global caries initiative priority action areas target the eradication of early childhood caries in children less than three years of age and focus on primary and secondary prevention of caries and health promotion activities.

TRACK:2 ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY (OMFS)

Oral and maxillofacial surgery primarily deals with the treatment of diseases, injuries and defects in the neck, head, jaws, face and the soft and hard tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. OMF surgeons can perform dentoalveolar surgery, dental implants, orthognathic jaw surgery, oncologic surgery, reconstructive surgery, TMJ surgery and cosmetic surgery of jaws, face and neck. Surgeons in this field require a great degree of expertise and sound medical knowledge to assess and handling medical emergency arising during the procedure. Currently the maxillomandibular advancement surgery is often performed to treat the obstructive sleep apnoea caused due to intermittent relaxation of the throat muscle which blocks the airway during sleep. Micro vascular surgery and stem cell technology is finding a profitable scope in OMFS. It plays a major role in the diagnosis and treatment of benign pathology, tumours, cysts, head and neck oncology.

TRACK:3 DENTAL PHARMACOLOGY

Dental pharmacology is the study of medication used to treat the injuries, defects or diseases of the oral cavity. Having sound knowledge in pharmacology permits a dentist to intelligently discuss the drugs and associated effects with patients and other health care professionals. The drugs that are commonly prescribed in dentistry are the local anaesthetics used during dental procedures, antibiotics to treat infections and NSAIDs for pain management. There is a growing concern regarding the multiple drug therapy in patients with co-morbidities. More studies are needed to determine whether the issues like polypharmacy and co-morbidities affect the quality of patient care and the effectiveness and safety of treatments.

TRACK:4 DIAGNOSIS AND PREVENTION OF ORAL DISEASES

Dentistry is promptly developing from a surgical and reparative profession into a healing profession. Advanced diagnostic technologies are playing a vital role in both data collection and assessment capabilities. The fluorescence technology evaluates the chemistry and morphology of various hard and soft tissues and substances within oral cavity. The purpose is not only to treat the disease state but also to prevent the future re occurrence. The advanced diagnostic technique so called liquid-based cytology of the oral cavity has been proven superior to the conventional Pap smear.

TRACK:6 GERODONTOLOGY AND PERIODONTOLOGY

The ultimate aim of gerodontology is to improve the quality of life and oral health in older people. Periodontology is the study of diseases of the supporting and investing structures of the teeth, gums, cementum and alveolar bone. The boundaries of most conventional dental specialties must be repeatedly crossed to provide optimal dental care in older people. There is an increased risk of oral mucosal lesions in denture wearers than in non-wearers. There is a need for long term follow up in geriatric patients to minimise the adverse effects, drug-drug interactions and drug abuse. There is a need for dental practitioner to have sound knowledge in principles and chose the proper laser for the intended clinical application.
